Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe, minimally invasive procedure designed to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids without the need for surgery. Fibroids are noncancerous growths that can cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure and other symptoms. During UFE, an interventional radiologist uses imaging guidance to insert a small catheter into the arteries supplying the fibroids and blocks them with tiny particles. This cuts off the blood flow, causing the fibroids to shrink and symptoms to improve.
UFE is a highly effective alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy, allowing women to preserve their uterus and avoid major surgery. The procedure typically offers a quicker recovery, less risk of complications and a return to normal activities within a few days.
